Canada - Globe and Mail Editorial calls for Liberals to move faster in creating the plan for Marijuana legalization. The editorial points to the fact that Trudeau broke the marijuana possession law when he was an MP because he admitted to having smoked it while he was an MP.

"And Justin Trudeau? He says he smoked the stuff while serving in Parliament – he confessed to a crime, basically – and Canadians made him Prime Minister."

Canada - NDP leader Tom Mulcair says stop the arrests and criminal charges for marijuana possession.

During a visit to Saskatoon on Tuesday, NDP leader Tom Mulcair told reporters he is not pleased with the government’s progress on the legalization of marijuana. He said while the government waits on consultations, people are needlessly going to jail for simple possession of the drug. “We’ve said nobody who is using marijuana for personal purposes should ever wind up being arrested or having a criminal record for that,” Mulcair said. During the election, the NDP advocated decriminalization of marijuana.

Canada - 'Police aren't anti-marijuana': Clive Weighill, President of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and Saskatoon's Police Chief. 

Weighill says the Liberal government needs to clarify Canada’s marijuana laws to combat serious misunderstandings about the legality of the drug. “The police aren’t anti-marijuana,” Chief Clive Weighill said. “But we are in a situation right now that is a very grey zone.” Weighill said despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election promise that pot will be legalized for personal use, smoking, growing and selling weed in Canada is still against the law..

Ireland - Terminal cancer patient claims illegal medical marijuana use has prolonged his life.

Kieran McCrory, who started taking illegal cannabis oil after he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, said his doctors have now told him that his tumour has stopped growing. A spokesperson for Cancer Research UK said: "We know that cannabinoids - the active chemicals found in cannabis - can have a range of different effects on cancer cells grown in the lab and animal tumours. "But at the moment there isn't good evidence from clinical trials to prove that they can safely and effectively treat cancer in patients. "Cancer Research UK is supporting clinical trials for treating cancer with cannabinoid-based drugs in order to gather solid data on whether they benefit people with cancer."

Canada - Momentum mounts for medical marijuana. More Canadians are using medical marijuana for a wider array of health ailments, but the research hasn’t kept pace.

It was a watershed moment for the study of medical marijuana. This past December, Canadian university researchers, federal and provincial officials, patient advocates and industry representatives met in Vancouver to set priorities for evidence-based inquiries into a drug long overshadowed by its reputation as an illegal way to get high. The two-day, invitation-only meeting – convened by the Arthritis Society and partly funded by licensed growers of cannabis for medical purposes – is the latest sign that investigations of medical cannabis are moving into the research mainstream.

Canada - Victoria plans to regulate medical marijuana shops with $5,000 fee.

The City of Victoria has laid out some ground rules as it moves to regulate illegal marijuana dispensaries and other related businesses, including a licensing fee that is a fraction of what Vancouver imposes with similar regulations.
